WWII Veteran and Guardian Applications - Eastern Iowa Honor Flight
Waterloo Honor Flight If you are from Blackhawk, Bremer, Buchanan, No. Tama or Grundy County please visit the Waterloo Honor Flight website at http://www.shdpost730waterloohonorflight.org/
Our highest priority is to the aging WWII veterans along with any veteran facing terminal illness. All Veterans are included in the Honor Flight program and will be honored with future flights that are yet to be planned.
Guardians are essential to the success of the Honor Flight Program. Typically, we divide into groups of 2 ambulatory Veterans and 1 Guardian. Veterans who need additional assistance such as a wheelchair are assigned to a single Guardian to enhance the Veteran's safety.. A training session/orientation is held approximately two weeks prior to actual departure. Veterans and Guardians get to meet each other and review information they will need to know for a safe and enjoyable trip. On our departure day the guardian's responsibilities begin. Once the veterans start to arrive, guardians will ensure boarding passes and IDs are in hand, get the veterans through security and to the gate, assist in boarding, etc. From the moment the veterans are in our hands, until the point we return them to their loved ones in the evening, guardians will be asked to treat these heroes as if they are family and ensure that every veteran has a safe, memorable, and rewarding experience. Guardians are volunteers and are asked to donate to cover costs for their trip only when they are notified they will be accompanying a veteran. Current donation is approximately $550.00 which covers the cost of airfare, food and transportation in Washington D.C.
Examples of volunteer positions include being at the airport to send off the veterans in the morning and then being there at the end of the trip to welcome them home with a cheering reception; office help with answering phones and entering application info into the data system; mailing out of requested material; contacting veterans and guardians and making arrangements based on our projected flight schedules. If you would like to volunteer your services, please contact us and join us to make the dreams of our veterans a reality. You can make a difference. Thank You for your support.
